HSB BR 199.8 “Harzkamel”

These pages are just internal notes and are incomplete, and the info is not always verified. I am definitely not an expert on the subject.

Prototype

  • Mid 1980 – Deutsche Reichsbahn wanted to use diesel locomotives. Plan was to order 30 standard gauge type BR 112 diesel locomotives and convert them to meter gauge.
  • 1988 – first delivery in Wernigerode.
  • 1989 – first two diesel locomotives in service, because the big diesels looked so big on a narrow gauge railway, they received the nickname “Harzkamel”.
  • 1990 – 8 more locomotives followed, bringing the total to 10.
  • Early 1990 – Politics decided that the steam locomotives should remain for tourist purposes, thus the original plan of 30 diesel locomotives was cancelled.
  • 1993 – Change from DR to HSB.
  • 1996 – No real purpose for Harzkamel locomotives, steam locomotives were still mainly in use, as well as Triebwagen railcars that came into service.
  • 1998 – To support the Rollbocke system, two Harzkamel were upgraded with standard gauge folding buffers, as well as a remote control system – 199 872 & 199 874.
  • 1998 – Harzkamel 199 861 also received remote control for switching duties.
  • 1998 – Four Harzkamel were sold to Adtranz and converted back to standard gauge – 199 863, 199 870, 199 879, 199 891.
  • Today – 6 locomotives still in HSB ownership, 3 with remote control in service, 3 without remote control were parked.
